SUPPORT OUR PALACE,
Neuse River is always beautiful---- daylight or---------sunset
on the Neuse
New Bern was founded by Baron Christophe DeGraffenreid in
1710, he named it New Bern, because the location reminded him of Bern,
Switzerland, his home, which is also bordered by 2 rivers.
"Bernie" our bear mascot, is on the flag presented to New
Bern city fathers in the late 1800s by the mayor of Bern, Switzerland.
Bernie is an unique image, his curly tongue and mis-shapen legs make him a
beloved, almost toy-like personage, rather than a fierce symbol. He is
found all over the city; his original, almost fierce image is Bern Switzerland's mascot as
well. Find the Baron's bust on Pollock St. next to City Hall.
